Rob peered out the window. He could see the deer's corpse and the dark gash on its neck where the ax had struck. He felt sick. Somebody had killed the animal less than fifty yards from the cabin, which meant there was an armed intruder somewhere in the woods.

He thought of everything that had happened to him in the past couple of years. He and Sarah had gotten married less than five years after Chris had been killed, and at first, everything with them was just perfect. She was beautiful. Everybody said he was punching way above his weight class, but he didn't care. If people wanted to be jealous, so be it. He had the gorgeous woman on his arm and that was all he cared about. He loved her, and she said she loved him.

He'd trained as a teacher at college and lucked out, getting a job at his old high school the first time he asked. Sarah had come from a wealthy family and she had high expectations, so they stretched what little money they collectively earned to buy a nice place up in the hills. All was good. When the kids came along, Rob felt like his life was complete. They had the house and the lifestyle, and now, they had the children to complete their family unit.

The problem was that his salary could only get them so far, and the little existence they'd built for themselves came at a price—a pretty hefty one. They had a mortgage, school fees, utility bills, Sarah's night classes, gym memberships, two cars, and several vacations to the Caribbean. Not to mention, the obscene amount of money she spent on designer clothes and high-end accessories for herself. Pretty soon, things weren't getting paid, and warning letters were piling up at the front door.

With everything piling on top of them, he and Sarah's relationship became strained, and gradually, she started sleeping in a separate room. He missed being beside her, he missed her touch, but more than that, he missed what they'd had. It seemed like the blissful joy of their wedding day was a hundred years ago, and everything they'd built together was crumbling around them like an old ruin.

It was a mess. His whole life was one big, stinking pile of garbage. But still, he would have traded his little weekend away in the mountains for one moment back at home with Sarah and the kids. He would have done that in a heartbeat, without hesitation.

"What are you thinking, big guy?" Mike asked, joining him at the window.

"That whoever did that is still out there."

"No way," Mike replied. "That animal could have been wounded at any time during the day. Just because it died on our lawn, doesn't mean it was murdered nearby."

"But those sounds," Rob said. "You heard them, right? Something, or someone, killed that deer while we all stood there watching."

"We don't know that. Those noises could have been caused by anything. For all we know, the deer might have injured itself.
